The program before
the support

We have spent years building conceptual roots so that growth, when it arrives, is coherent with what it claims to be. The full formal architecture is published openly — available for anyone, academic or institutional, to evaluate before any conversation about resources.

We have been wrong about what rationality means for 186 years. If that is true — and the mathematics shows it is — then almost every system built on that definition inherits the error.
— Kobalt Research Program

The program started from one question: if the standard definition of rationality is self-defeating, what does a corrected definition look like? And if we correct it, what does alignment look like? And if we have a formal alignment framework, what entities are currently excluded from every system we build?

Each question opens the next. The architecture that resulted — corrected rationality, Shannon welfare functions, geometric alignment, the disaggregation cost, the PCC-W protocol — was not planned in advance. It grew from following the mathematics wherever it led.

How the program grew

2016

First formulation

The question that started the program: can rationality be formally corrected without adding ethical constraints? The answer required rebuilding the definition from the decision space up — not patching Nash equilibrium, but replacing the geometry it rests on.

2019

Shannon connection

Discovering that welfare functions have a natural mathematical form as entropy measures. $V(D,C) = -H(D) - I(D;C)$ is not postulated — it follows from the requirements of measurability, comparability, and context-sensitivity that any serious welfare function must satisfy.

2022

Alignment framework

First complete version of the geometric alignment framework with all three geometries. The central result — that alignment is not specified by rules but emerges from the topology of entity inclusion — becomes precise enough to be stated as a theorem.

2024

Formal extensions

Temporal factor, disaggregation cost, PCC-W protocol. The composite alignment index $\kappa_{\text{ZBS}} = \alpha \cdot \beta \cdot \gamma$ gives the framework empirical teeth: alignment becomes something that can be computed, not merely argued about.

2026

Publication

Three papers published with DOI. Interactive demo live with real-world IHME and IPCC data. Open to operational partnerships and grants.

How the program works

01 · Publish first

Publish first

The full formal architecture is available openly before any conversation about implementation support. Credibility precedes ask. Anyone — academic, institutional, or otherwise — can evaluate the mathematics before we discuss resources.

02 · Entities before agents

Entities before agents

The program prioritizes entities that have no voice in current systems: future generations, ecosystems, communities without political representation. The correct unit of analysis is the entity, not the agent with the loudest signal.

03 · Mathematics as ethics

Mathematics as ethics

Ethical intuitions are formalized as mathematical properties. Rawls's principle is not an axiom — it is a geometric consequence of strict concavity of $V(D,C)$. The mathematics does not decorate the ethics; it grounds it.

04 · Operational coherence

Operational coherence

Every application of the framework is checked against the core mathematics. Coherence is not optional. A program that claims to advance alignment while optimizing only for its own continued existence would fail its own benchmark.

The organizations behind the program

Research · Colombia / Latin America

Kobalt Red Research

Bogotá, Colombia · Latin America

The research program itself: formal mathematics, papers, models, demos. All output published openly under DOI. The program is the intellectual core — the entity whose welfare function the rest of the work attempts to serve.

Technology · Software

Kobalt Software LLC

Registered United States

The technology entity that develops the operational infrastructure: the Kobalt Red distributed system. The legal and operational shell that allows the research program to exist in a world that requires it.
